POLITICIANS TO OVERSPEND IN THEIR CAMPAIGNS

The High Court has upheld an application by ODM to stop election rules requiring candidates in the 2017 general elections to disclose their campaign finances and team members.
In her ruling Justice Roseline Aburily has stayed the implementation of the rule
requiring candidates and political parties to establish campaign committees and open accounts for campaign funds.
Justice Aburily has ruled that the IEBC is acting on a vacuum since Parliament has not enacted the laws to enforce the provisions of section 6 of the Election Campaign Finance Act, 2013.
The Judge further says the December 8th 2016 deadline for aspirants to disclose their campaign finances is vague since public servants seeking to contest in the August 8th polls are yet to resign adding that political parties are also yet to nominate their candidates.
The case will be heard on the 12th of this month.
